Testing and Maintenance of Your Smoke Alarms

Yes smoke alarms do require some maintenance to keep them working in top form, but luckily this maintenance is very easy to carry out.

It is a good idea to lightly vacuum the alarm with a small bristle attachment every six months or so, to keep dust from the unit. The last maintenance required is the battery. Remember to change your batteries regularly, on your birthday, or when daylight savings time changesEvery spring and fall when the time changes to and from Daylight Savings Time, pop a new battery into your smoke alarms. In most cases the battery will last one year, but keeping to this schedule provides an easy method of remembering when to change the battery. This method also ensures you're covered in case you forget to change the battery this fall, likely you'll catch it in the spring. Use only batteries that are recommended for your particular smoke alarm.

Smoke alarms should be tested regularly to ensure they are in good working order. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations as smoke alarms can differ. Generally, you should test your alarms weekly by pushing the alarm test button. If you are unable to do this, you can use a broom handle or cane to gently depress the button. And remember if you've been away, test your smoke alarms when you get back. The batteries may have run out while you were away.
