Bauhaus Flashover / Smoke Explosion

Bauhaus Flashover/ Smoke Explosion

Here's seven pictures from an incident from our past circa early 1980's. We of course new about the incident, but only recently learned that there were some photographs available. Better yet, the pictures were taken in sequence. In picture #1 Gravenhurst Station Two firefighters have arrived and set up their first attack lines. At this point there is heavy dark grey smoke pushing from the eaves. The man in the blue parka on the right is a local newspaper photographer. In picture #2, the smoke gets even worse as an attack team in self-contained breating apparatus with a hoseline prepares to open the front door. In picture #3, as the team approaches close to the front door, the smoke explodes in a fireball that sends the team back into a heap, as can be seen on the left in front of the car. In picture #4 a firefighter motions to the newspaper photographer and they beat a hasty retreat. In pictures #5 and #6, then Deputy Chief Lorne McNeice directs a hose stream into the building. Picture #7 shows the same area after that initial hoseline application while the firefighters regroup before going back in for the fight.
