Stop, Drop and Roll

Everyone must know what to do if their clothing catches fire. The best way to smother flames is to stop, drop and roll. Your reaction must be immediate. Never try to run because the flames will become more intense.

You must stop and immediately drop to the floor, and roll over and over to smother the flames. This may be difficult to do if you have some physical limitations, but is is crucial that you manage to lower yourself to the ground as quickly as possible. If you can't lower yourself to the ground, then a large towel or blanket can be used to smother the flames on your clothing.

If someone else's clothing is on fire, get them on the floor and smother the flames with a coat, blanket or rug.

Learn Not To Burn
The Learn Not to BurnĀ® (LNTB) program was developed by the National Fire Protection Association to teach basic fire safety to young children. It was based on NFPA's belief that fire safety information should be presented in a positive, non-threatening manner., The Learn Not to BurnĀ® (LNTB) program teaches children how to make responsible choices regarding health and safety.

The LNTB Preschool Program uses original songs, games, and activities to teach eight basic fire and burn prevention behaviors to children ages 3-5. The lessons in the program are short and simple and encourage active participation. The program includes a 60-page teacher's guide featuring detailed lesson plans, fire safety background information, letters to parents and reproducible coloring sheets. Each lesson is reinforced with a lively, easy-to-learn fire safety song included on a cassette tape of original music.Learn Not To Burn program

We have been very fortunate to have the entire LNTB curriculum adopted for use by the Trillium Lakelands Board of Education in all Gravenhurst area schools. It integrates fire safety into other subject areas taught in our schools. The program stresses teaching positive, practical fire safety behaviors.

The program is organized into three levels. Level One is suggested for children in kindergarten through grade two, Level Two for children from grades three to five and Level Three for grades six to eight. Each level contains all the materials the educator needs to teach fire safety, and it supports the individual teacher's personal style of teaching. Fire safety may be taught as a separate subject or integrated into other curriculum areas.

Gravenhurst firefighters assist teachers with the presentation of the program, going into the classrooms at key times through the school year. This activity along with the use of LNTB mascot "Sparky" at community events provides continuity for the program.
