Another lightening strike, this
time on the steeple/bell tower of St. James Anglican Church around 6 a.m.
on August 10, 2004. In Picture #1, Unit Seven arrives on scene to find the
fire in the bell tower spreading towards the main church. Firefighters
were able to stop the spread, but our ground ladders would not reach the
bell tower roof to be able to fully extinguish the fire. In Picture #2.
enter our mutual aid partners to the north, and the Bracebridge Fire
Department, with Deputy Chief Paul Duff, arrived with Ladder One, and
allowed us to get the fire in the tower completely out. In Picture #3 the
flames can be seen after firefighters opened the roof with a rescue saw.
Oh and yes, the church was saved and the bell tower rebuilt. Photos by

Flashover/ Smoke Explosion
Here's seven pictures from an incident from our past. We knew about the
incident, but it was only recently we learned that there were some
photographs available. Better yet, a set of photographs in sequence. In
Picture #1, Gravenhurst Station Two firefighters have arrived and begin to
set-up. At this point there is heavy smoke coming from the eaves. The man
in the blue parka is a local newspaper photographer. In Picture #2 the
smoke gets even worse as a team in airpacks and a hoseline prepare to open
the front door. In Picture #3 as the team approaches the front door the
smoke explodes in a fireball that sends the team back in a heap, as can be
seen on the left in front of the car. In Picture #4 a firefighter and the
newspaper photographer quickly retreat and in Picture #5 and #6, then
Deputy Chief Lorne McNeice directs a hosestream into the building. Picture
#7 shows the same area after the initial attack while firefighters regroup
before returning to the fight. Photos courtesy John Lennox.

This Jeep Cherokee caught fire after getting stuck in a swamp while out
four wheeling. The hot catalytic converter set the grass alight, which
spread to the vehicle. The large amount of flame in the photograph is from
the full gas tank catching fire. Photo by Eric Reilly. |
