The Gravenhurst Volunteer Fire Department

Course of Instruction

The training aspect of being a firefighter with the Gravenhurst Fire Department is an extremely important part of the job. From the first contact with the department throughout the firefighter's volunteer career, training is an ongoing requirement. While the variety and scope of the training programs and courses change with the needs of the department and legislation, continual training and drills in the "basics" of firefighting operations remains steady.

Recruit Program

When new firefighters join the department they begin a 12 unit recruit program which generally lasts from 12 to 16 weeks. It is designed to give the recruit the skills needed to continue to learn and work with the other members of their station. This is a rapid process of development to bring the recruits' abilities up to a general level needed so that the rest of the station will not have to interrupt their training schedule to fit in the new recruit. Emphasis is on basic knowledge combined with safety training to give each recruit the necessary skills to operate at a training session or emergency scene without jeopardizing the safety of themselves or the other firefighters. Firefighters use this time separate from the regular training sessions in "hands on" practical evolutions.

Weekly Training

Each station trains one night per week for 50 weeks each year. Station One firefighters train on Wednesday nights each week, Station Two on Tuesday nights and Station Three on Monday nights. Each week a lecture or practical session takes place. The Ontario Firefighter Standards are used in preparing the lessons which are administered under the Ontario Fire Marshal's Curriculum. At the completion of each unit, which includes practical and knowledge components, firefighters are "signed off" by a provincial trainer/facilitator. During the winter months the training takes place in the classroom. During conditions of better weather, the firefighters "take to the streets" to continue the learning process as part of practical evolutions.

Special Courses

Whenever possible, special sessions are arranged to supplement the ongoing training schedule. These courses include Emergency Vehicle Operator (EVO) training, Shore Based Ice Rescue, First Aid, CPR and Auto Extrication to name a few. Many of these courses are run to ensure that our firefighters maintain their certifications as required by law. These courses are usually conducted on weekends and evenings to avoid conflict with the regular training sessions..
